Herbs
Herbs can make a very useful and attractive addition to the plot.
Sometimes they can be used as companion planting to ward off unwanted predators, planting basil with tomatoes just seems ‘right’.Most herbs are highly fragrant and can be used to mask the natural aroma of other crops that may attract attacking bugs on your allotment. This fragrance can also be used to attract bees and other beneficial insects.

Commonly grown herbs include mint, lavender, sage, rosemary and thyme. Some of our members have success growing mediteranean herbs such as basil, corriander and parsley. Herbs for drying should be picked just before flowering on a dry day, tied in bunches and hung in an airy spot to dry.

Once the herbs have dried sufficiently, the leaves can be crumbled and stored in jars, ready for the cooking pot.
