Prevention should be the first line of defence in your pest control strategy. Start by planting healthy plants in to well prepared soil that is suited to there needs. This encourages the plant to stay strong, healthy and helps to strengthen the plants natural ability to combat the occasional outbreak.

If pests strike don't reach for the chemical spray straight away. There are other more natural methods at your disposal. Chemical sprays are harmful to all insects and bugs, some of these bugs are good for the plot as they are natural predators of the attacking pests, and will aid you in controlling there numbers.

Other methods of control can include :

Handpicking slow moving pests such as, caterpillars, snails, and beetles. These can be dropped in to a bucket of soapy water and disposed of.

Bugs like aphids (greenfly) and spider mites can be shaken or wiped from your crops, also the introduction of aphid eating ladybirds in to your plot can be very beneficial.

Try capturing nocturnal pests using homemade traps. Sinking containers in to the ground and baiting them with beer, can be an effective trap for slugs.

Another option is to spray your crops with insectacidal soaps or a homemade soap based mixture. Use standard dishwashing soap mixed at approx 3 spoons of soap to a gallon of water. Remember these will harm both good and bad bugs, so be careful.
